CHAPTER 11

Adian picked up his phone, leaning far over his chair, irritating his sutures. But it was Van’s number so he suffered through. He swiped the screen, answering the call.

“Van?” he asked.

“Sorry, no, this is Gol, her tech support. Are you ready for me to patch you through to Captain Trajen? Oh, and please don’t mention anything about her mother right now.”

“Yes, yes, of course,” Adian sputtered, sounding like a middle schooler. Why wouldn’t he talk about Mrs. Trajen? He had to keep his voice down. He was at the hospital, taking the early morning shift. She was resting comfortably and all the Trajen boys were jet lagged out. Adian liked the early morning quiet. That hush as the world went from dark to light. Now, however every fiber of his being was on high alert.

“Adian?” Van’s voice came through. She sounded stressed.

“I’m here,” he answered. He wanted to blurt out about her mother’s condition, but perhaps Gol was right, maybe this wasn’t the best time for Van.

“Yah, I’m going to give you the fast forward version. I am in Syria, trying to find a suitcase nuke and I stepped on a pressure plate that has also locked all the doors.”

Adian sat with that for a moment. Each piece of information was a revelation and not a good one. Van was in Syria. Not good. Like the most opposite of good you could get. How bad did it have to be to go into Syria for? The second bit did explain that. A suitcase nuke. That would get someone into Syria.

Then the last part. Van was essentially standing on a bomb, just waiting for her to move.

Okay, Gol was right. Her mom’s condition could wait.

“Adian?”

“I’m here, sifting through our options.”

Van sighed. “So there are options? Neither of our munitions guys thought there were any…”

“They aren’t great, but I’ve got a few ideas,” Adian stated. “Gol can you switch me off Van and patch me into her team?”

“Can do,” Gol said.

“Wait!” Van shouted. “Tell me what you’re planning.”

How Adian wanted to, but his plan was out there. “I don’t want you to worry,” he said. “Trust me, you’ll know what to do when the time comes. Gol?”

* * *

Van couldn’t believe it when the comm switched off and Adian was gone. What the hell? She was the one stuck standing on a bomb. If he had a plan he should have shared it with her.

“Captain Trajen?” another voice hissed in her ear. Qanti.

“Yes, Commander.”

“You probably know why I am calling.”

“Yes, sir.”

Van decided to keep her responses short. Less to argue with.

“Need I go over the UNs guiding principles? That we do not interfere with any sovereign country unless specifically ordered to do so by the UN’s security council?”

“Sir, I get it. World War III, bad. I’m rogue,” Van stated. “But can I get my dressing down later, if I survive?”

There was a sigh on the other end of the line. “You might hope that bomb takes care of things, Captain, you may suffer more at my hands than the terrorist’s.
